CDRC: Opening up consumer data for social science research
Amy O'Neill (Leeds) and Sarah Sheppard (UCL/ Liverpool/ Oxford)

Consumer data is a key source of new and novel data or “Big data”.  Data previously available only within businesses are increasingly becoming available for research use.  These consumer data can be used to examine a wide variety of research questions.  But how can you as a researcher get access to these kinds of data and what kinds of analyses could you undertake with them?

Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council as part of Phase 2 of the Big Data Network, the Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC) provides researchers with access to a wide range of consumer data via a three-tier service. Our data has been obtained from a variety of organisations such as a major retailers, energy and transport providers. Much of the data we hold will be of interest to researchers working in the areas of geospatial big data, geospatial visualisation, geodemographics, health geographics and mapping.

In a bid to increase awareness of the Centre and our services, CDRC will deliver a two hour interactive workshop.

Wednesday, April 19 09:30 - 13:30

Part A (09:30-10:30) - HBS 2.2

The first part of the workshop will take a seminar format and focus on showcasing the CDRC data service, our data holdings and the research that has been undertaken to-date using Centre data. This will include demonstrations of how the data portal and mapping portal work, as well short presentations on some of our most popular datasets, for example, footfall data from the Local Data Company and property transaction data from Whenfresh/Zoopla. By providing detailed information on the background, variables and use cases of these data we aim to demonstrate their value and their potential breadth of application for geodemographic and geospatial research.

Tea/Coffee Break (10:30 -11:00)

Part B (11:00-12:00) HBS 2.3

The second half of the workshop will be aimed at interacting closely with workshop participants to ascertain how the CDRC might assist them in their research activity. It will commence with a short presentation outlining our services more broadly, including our training offering and research support service. A break out session will then take place. ‘Stations’ manned by our data scientists will enable participants to explore the CDRC data catalogue and mapping portal for themselves and to ask questions relating to our services. We will seek to consult participants about the type of data and support services they might wish to access at present and in future.

Part C (12:00 - 12:30) HBS 2.3

Introduction to GISRUK 2017 for the uninitated (Nick Bearman and Bruce Gittings)

Workshop feedback and lunch - Ground Floor, HBS, Hanson Room

A chance to network with all attendees of the pre-conference workshops.

We look forward to seeing you there!

The GISRUK conference series is an international conference which has grown out of the UK's national GIS research conference, established in 1993. We have held the conference at venues in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. GISRUK conferences are primarily aimed at the academic community, but welcomes delegates from government, commercial and other sectors. The conferences attract those interested in Geographical Information Science (GIS) and its applications from all parts of the UK, together with the European Union and beyond.
