Event description

Description

One Day, Two Events: holiness, unholiness, and their effects in Mark's Gospel

Tickets available for one or both sessions

The Speaker

Dr Crispin Fletcher-Louis is the Director of Whymanity: Research and Training (www.whymanity.com) and Visiting Fellow at the University of Gloucestershire. He is an internationally recognized biblical scholar, with an expertise in the historical context of the New Testament and is currently writing a four-volume book on Jesus and his divine identity (www.JesusMonotheism.com).

Teaching is delivered in a conversational, practically-focused format.

Morning: Contagious Holiness

We consider one aspect of Jesus’ healing ministry in Mark's Gospel, namely his interaction with lepers and people who were considered impure in the first Jewish world.

The teaching will:

  • provide fresh insights into Jesus’ method of healing and its implications for our lives today
  • explore Jesus’ unique self-understanding
  • draw on some of the latest archaeological discoveries from Israel

Timings

Arrive from 9:00 for a 9:30 start, finish 13:00 (lunch available from 13:00–14:00).

Afternoon: Contagious UnHoliness

This event is the follow-on to “Contagious Holiness”. If you have not already attended that event it is to that sign up for the morning's teaching as well as the afternoon.

We consider the way Christ reveals forces that quench the power of God. One aspect of his ministry was to open the eyes of his followers to forces and the human thoughts, words and actions that grieve God and limit his presence.

The event will:

  • Bring to light the meaning of passages in Mark’s Gospel, especially Jesus’ mysterious discussion with the disciples about yeast and loaves in Mark 8:14–21
  • Help to explain the origin and meaning of Paul’s warning that the Ephesian Christians should not “grieve the Holy Spirit” (Eph 4:30)
  • Explore the simple ways that we, today, can help to make God’s presence and power welcome

Timings

14:00–5:30

Location

There is on-road parking at the venue.

Refreshments

Available on arrival and throughout the morning and afternoon.

Lunch: soup, roll and sandwiches (13:00–14:00).

Comments on recent Whymanity events:

“An excellent day's teaching which stretched my whole being ...” Revd. Tim Sudworth

“Lots of people are saying things are "life-changing," but reflecting on my growth as a Christian over the last 10 years, I can genuinely say that Crispin's teaching has truly transformed me. His teaching allows you to enter into an ancient culture and explore for yourself the complexities of the text - resulting in an understanding of its meaning in a deep and personally profound way.” Anna Mason, KXC, London

“If you are a worship leader, then I can’t recommend this highly enough. It took me on a journey into the wide-open spaces of worship theology – from which I’ve never returned. The material presented by Crispin is engaging, interactive and totally inspiring” Neil Bennetts, The Worship Foundation
