Description

With Sonia Bergamasco and Lucy Russell
Introduced and moderated by Monica Capuani

Curated and moderated by Monica Capuani, "Contemporary" is a series of encounters – conversations, readings and live performances – presenting to the British audience an authoritative overview of Italian contemporary theatre.

Italian actors, playwrights and directors, both acclaimed masters and successful new voices, talk about their artistic research and discuss with important figures of British contemporary theatre.

Guests of the eighth encounter will be Sonia Bergamasco and Lucy Russell, who will read prose and poetry excerpts by Primo Levi, including the short stories Alcune applicazioni del Mimete (from Storie naturali, 1966), Il passa-muri (1986) and the autobiographical piece Ex chimico (from L’altrui mestiere, 1985).

In theatre she also worked with Theodoros Terzopoulos, Massimo Castri and Glauco Mauri.

After the Duse Award in 2014 for her work as an actress, in March 2017 she made her debut as a Director at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan in a new production entitled Louise e Renée, inspired by Balzac’s Letters of two brides, written by Stefano Massini.
In cinema, she played for the first time in 2001 in L’amore probabilmente by Giuseppe Bertolucci. She has been awarded the Nastro d’argento in 2004 as best protagonist actress in La meglio gioventù by Marco Tullio Giordana, and also worked with Bernardo Bertolucci in Io e te, with Silvio Soldini in the short film D’estate, and with Franco Battiato in Musikanten.
She also appeared in several TV series such as Il Commissario Montalbano. She has been patroness of the 73rd edition of the Film Biennale in Venice.

Lucy Russell is an English actress. She made her debut in the film Following by Christopher Nolan (1998) and has appeared in several movies since then, such as Éric Rohmer’s The Lady and the Duke (2001), Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins (2005) and François Ozon’s Angel (2007).

She has also performed in theatre and in several short films among which Murmur by Aurora Fearnley, which was in competition at Cannes 2016 and was nominated for the Best Short Film Award at London Short Film Festival (2016) and the Best Acting Ensemble and Best Short Film Awards at Lift Off London Short Film Festival (2015). Her most recent appearance is in the movie Toni Erdmann, written and directed by Maren Ade.
