Description

This event is part of the York Literature Festival 2017

11.30-13.30 Workshop 1: Mark Blacklock - Holgate, Room 136

Mark Blacklock (I'm Jack) and Andrew Michael Hurley (The Loney) each draw on the Gothic in different ways in their recent debut novels. I'm Jack interrogates our fascination with true crime, through its fictional engagement with the Yorkshire Ripper hoaxer, while The Loney draws on the Gothic dimensions of landscape in its rendition of the Cumbrian coast.

The authors will each run a daytime workshop. They will then both read from their novels and discuss the broader dimensions of their work in an evening event.

I’m Jack, published by Granta in 2015, was described by The Guardian as '[an] intelligent and disturbing slice of noir’ and by the Financial Times as 'a chilling debut.' Mark has co-written a screenplay adaptation of the novel which is currently in production. He is the director of the Master’s programme in Cultural and Critical Studies at Birkbeck College, where he also teaches across BA and MA programmes in English Literature. He has recently published essays on Ben Wheatley’s adaptation of JG Ballard’s High-Rise, geek culture and the spatial form of weird fiction. His first monograph, The Emergence of the Fourth Dimension, will be published by Oxford University Press in 2017. He is working on his second novel.
