José Luis Urquieta in Concert

Join us for an exciting evening of new music for oboe performed by one of the finest Latin American champions of new music.

Known as one of the most active Latin American artists of his generation, José Luis has intensely championed Latin American contemporary classical music, which has led him to perform concerts all around the world.

Born in La Serena, Chile, he began studying oboe with his father, Professor José Luis Urquieta Varela in the Experimental Music School “Jorge Peña Hen”, continuing his studies under the guidance of Daniel Vidal, Jorge Postel and Rodrigo Herrera at the Catholic University of Chile in Santiago.

He moved to Europe to continue his education, first in Montbéliard, France, where he studied with Christian Schmitt. He carried out his post-graduate studies with Professors Thomas Indermuhle and Pilar Fontalba at the Superior Conservatory of Music of the Balearic Islands, Spain, where he won First Place in the Chamber Music Competition “Art Jove”, graduating with honors and receiving the “End of Year Prize for Excellence”.

He continued his training in Germany where he studied at the Music School of Karlsruhe furthering his studies in oboe with Professor Thomas Indermuhle, Chamber Music with Professor Krystian Nyquist and Baroque Oboe with Professor Susanne Regel.


He has been invited to collaborate with diverse groups such as The Ensemble of Contemporary Music of the Balearic Islands; The Symphonic Orchestra of Navarra; The Symphonic Orchestra of the Balearic Islands, Spain; Philharmonic Orchestra of Buenos Aires, Argentina; Philharmonic Orchestra of Medellin, Colombia; Iberoamerican Orchestra Cab-Unseco, Venezuela; Youth Orchestra of the Americas (YOA), U.S.A.; National Symphonic Orchestra of Ecuador; Symphonic Orchestra of Chile.

He is a founding member of the “Oboe South Ensemble”, formed by renowned oboists from Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina and Chile.
