Description

Join us in the Berrill Theatre and online on Tuesday 6 February, 6:00 - 7:00pm for the Inaugural Lecture of Professor Edoardo Ongaro: Context in public management, the missing link

We are delighted to invite you to Professor Edoardo Ongaro’s inaugural lecture, Context in public management, the missing link in which he will consider the importance of taking politico-administrative and cultural context systematically into account for the advancement of the field of public management, and the social sciences more broadly, rather than adopting more generic approaches.

Edoardo Ongaro is Professor of Professor of Public Management at the Faculty of Business and Law at The Open University (OU). Previously he held positions at Northumbria University, as Professor of International Public Services Management, and SDA Bocconi School of Management and Bocconi University, where he still serves as Visiting Professor of Management of International and Supranational Organizations. He is President of the European Group for Public Administration.

He has also served on various academic and expert committees and contributed to numerous international research projects. He has been visiting professor and an invited speaker at various institutions in Europe, the Americas and Asia and is an editor of Public Policy and Administration.

He has published extensively on the topic of administrative reforms and comparative public management. Works include The Palgrave Handbook of Public Administration and Management in Europe (Palgrave, 2017, co-edited with Sandra van Thiel); Philosophy and Public Administration: An Introduction (Elgar, 2017); Strategic Management in Public Services Organizations: Concepts, Schools and Contemporary Issues (2015, Routledge, co-authored with Ewan Ferlie); Multi-Level Governance: The Missing Linkages (editor, 2015, Emerald); and Public Management Reform and Modernization: Trajectories of Administrative Change in Italy, France, Greece, Portugal and Spain (2009, Elgar).

In Context in public management, the missing link, Edoardo will describe how most of his professional life has been devoted to gaining a better understanding of why a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach does not work when it comes to public policy and management, and in the social sciences at large. He will highlight the importance of context and demonstrate examples of why a certain policy or practice could work well in one place, but not in another one and why certain ‘solutions’ produce very different results when transferred from one country to another. Edoardo dedicates this inaugural lecture to Professor Christopher Pollitt, who was also an OU professor: an esteemed colleague, a leading scholar and a dear friend.
