Continuity and Change in Caring Relationships: Launch of the Special Issue
Join us for the launch of the latest special issue of Futures of Work (see: https://futuresofwork.co.uk), which explores the evolving landscape of care through the lens of continuity and change in caring relationships. This issue brings together diverse voices and perspectives from across sectors - adult social care, general practice, education - and a variety of workplaces, to critically examine the realities of care provision today.
Despite policy ambitions such as those outlined in the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) quality standard, which emphasises continuity of care and support, the articles in this issue reveal a more complex and often fragmented reality. Contributors reflect on the emotional labour of care, the blurred boundaries between care providers and recipients, and the structural challenges that undermine sustained relationships in care settings.
Highlights include:
- Reflections on Polly Morland's book A Fortunate Woman and the call to re-centre continuity in general practice.
- First-hand accounts from domiciliary care workers on the “revolving door” of care provision.
- Insights into employer responsibilities for supporting informal carers in the workplace.
- A fresh perspective on climate change education as a form of care, and how continuity can be reimagined to foster meaningful action.
This event will feature short presentations from contributing authors, followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A. Whether you work in care, research it, or are simply interested in the future of work and wellbeing, this launch offers a rich opportunity to engage with pressing questions about how we care—and how we might care better.
