About this event

Join Kayd for a special evening celebrating the work of Nuruddin Farah, one of Africa’s most celebrated literary figures, on the occasion of his Honorary Doctorate from SOAS University of London, awarded in recognition of his remarkable contributions to Somali culture and literature.

The evening will feature a conversation between Nuruddin Farah and Hashi Mohamed, exploring Farah’s influential body of work and his impact on Somali literature and identity.

Nuruddin Farah: Born in 1945 in Baidoa, Somalia, Nuruddin Farah is an internationally acclaimed novelist and one of the most important voices in contemporary African literature. He is the author of fourteen novels, as well as plays, short stories, and essays that examine themes of conflict, exile, migration, gender, and the Somali diaspora. His debut novel, From a Crooked Rib, is considered a cornerstone of East African literature.

Farah has lived and worked across the globe including in Sudan, India, Uganda, South Africa, Nigeria, the United States, Italy, and Germany bringing a deeply transnational perspective to his writing. Among his many accolades, he is a recipient of the Neustadt International Prize for Literature.

The conversation will be hosted by Hashi Mohamed, a barrister, broadcaster, and author of the critically acclaimed book People Like Us, which explores issues of social mobility in modern Britain. His legal practice specializes in planning and environmental law, and he is widely known for his eloquence, insight, and commitment to public service.
