About this Event

Our purpose

Doing well and doing good are becoming increasingly interconnected in our rapidly changing world. The Purpose Collective is a trio of purpose pioneers with a shared passion. We want to create a buzz about making work meaningful so that each person feels energised by what they do, day-to-day. We want to build a network of leaders who have conversations about making a difference. We want to see positive change happen: in organisations, teams and individuals.

Our guest

Derek Bruce has a great background in leadership, people and talent development, consultancy, and business communication. This has come from working with market leading global organizations in the Fashion, Financial Services, Media, Retail and Technology industries. His experience of working on successful transformations in the UK, Europe, the Americas, and Asia has ensured he is able to adapt his style to suit different cultures.

Derek prides himself on building trust, and long-term relationships to help people to accomplish their goals. These are also the principles of his own organisation, Derek Bruce Associates, which was launched in May 2019, via which he is launched the Extraordinary Mentors Network, which supports professionals from Afro-Caribbean backgrounds in their careers through pro bono career mentoring.

Alongside these roles, Derek consults and develops leaders and non-leaders, and hosts large digital and physical global events for industry leading organizations. He also provides insights into leadership and organizational development at global seminars and conferences. Derek's principles focus on listening first and speaking second and making sure he enables people and businesses to continue to thrive sustainably.

Outside of work, he is married to Floriana, and his passions are riding motorbikes, playing, and watching football, films and travelling (obviously BC – Before Coronavirus).

About this session

Purpose can sometimes be something that jumps up and grabs you while you are not expecting it. And for Derek Bruce, this is exactly what happened during the summer of 2020.

While absorbing the global responses to numerous acts of racism taking place, there was a strong feeling of how to make a change to the narrative and make a difference in his professional space to support people of colour. Through discussions and support from many expected (and unexpected sources) he was able to set the Extraordinary Mentors Network, a movement to support professionals from Afro Caribbean backgrounds with Extraordinary Mentors

This session will explore how his purpose led to the creation of the Extraordinary Mentors Network, highlight how people are pulled tighter by a common purpose and, and share some of the numerous acts of support which came during his journey.

The webinar will enable the participants to:

- Learn about the journey and experience from having a strong purpose to making it happen

- Hear about the emotional and practical ups and downs, and how to address them, when deciding to act on your purpose

- Understand and experience the power of having a joint purpose and how it bought together over 60 people in less than four months

The Purpose Collective - Meet the team

Chris Blackwell’s passion is providing leadership development and consultancy to Scale-ups. Chris is an experienced CEO and has led organisations that have achieved incredible growth. Early in his career, he helped Ingeus grow from £4m revenue to £120m in ten years and subsequently helped MAXIMUS grow from £25m revenue to £170m in under four years. Those experiences inspired the S.W.I.F.T model for sustainable growth, which sets out the foundations for successful growth and the five key-skills and stages of growth. Chris’s first book, ‘Purpose First – the vital ingredient for swift and sustainable growth’ will be published at the end of 2021.

Sarah Rozenthuler has a passion for engaging teams to do great work. When a team becomes purpose-led, rather than dominated by a strong personality, it achieves extraordinary results. Sarah joined the Purpose Collective as Covid-19 took hold and made more conventional ways of working impossible. Sarah has discovered how purpose is a magnet for collaboration even when a team can’t get in the same room together. As the most potent unit of change in an organisation, Sarah loves to help teams go on the journey to become purpose-led. Her clients include BP, Discovery Inc and Standard Chartered Bank. Sarah is the author of two books: How to Have Meaningful Conversations (Watkins, 2019) and Powered by Purpose: Energise Your People to Do Great Work with a foreword by Paul Polman and an epilogue by Dr Victoria Hurth.

Alberto Gonzalez Otero is an optimist leader and entrepreneur who believes in Purpose as the driving force for positive change for individuals and organisations.
