Description

This course focuses on the experiences of families caring for children who have life-threatening and life-limiting condition and are not expected to reach adulthood. It will provide professionals with an insight into the journey of the families and carers for these children in order to support them as they make decisions around palliative and end of life care for their child.

Delegates will leave with a better understanding of the family’s experience of caring for a child who will die prematurely, the decisions they are faced with, why and how communication can break down and steps that can be taken to avoid this.

They will also have the opportunity to discuss and practice techniques for addressing difficult subjects during the life journey of a life limited child.

The course will comprise presentations, anecdotal evidence, interactive exercises and some role play.

Stephanie Nimmo is a writer, journalist and freelance consultant. She has been writing a multi-award winning blog Was this in the plan? since 2008. It charts her journey caring for her youngest daughter, Daisy, who was born with an extremely rare and life limiting genetic disease. In 2014 Steph’s husband, Andy was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he died the following year. 13 months after Andy’s death Steph had to make the decision to end Daisy’s life support as she had succumbed to irreversible organ failure and sepsis. She had just turned 12.

Steph has written a bestselling book, also called Was this in the plan?, documenting her life and how she chose to thrive and not just survive when faced with the unimaginable. She has also written a children’s book, Goodbye Daisy, which supports children with learning disabilities grieving the loss of a loved one.

Steph works closely with palliative care professionals in order to provide input to policy-making as an expert by lived experience.
