Conversations with Lula

Lula will be collaborating with three artists: Martha Barr, Jamie Moran and Madeleine Vietmeier.

‘In Conversation’ will be an investigation of their practices in dialogue with one another.

Communicating different states of being, not through words but through bodies.

Performance as a form of research rather than finished pieces.

While these performances happen, we invite you to be an active spectator, responding to each one through your own journey.

We invite you to draw, write, think, or just sit still, whatever feels right to you.

Performance 1: The Basement - Lula in conversation with Martha  = BALANCING

The artists will explore the exchange of energy between body and material, using art to process and try to understand their minds.

While Martha grapples with the raw unpredictability of clay embracing its weight, spillage, and resistance, Lula attempts to disappear inside.

Lula becomes the support and disruptor, being a single force within. She looks for support as Martha builds vessels that shift, collapse, tear and reconstruct around Lula’s body.

Performance 2: The Main Stage – Lula in conversation with Jamie  = SHIFTING STRAIN Both artists are drawn to the physical body: its limits, endurance and ability to shift states of being. In this piece, they push themselves into discomfort, engaging with anger and exhaustion. From uncontrolled shaking and bodies slapping to frantic running, and collapse. Motion dominates until it dissolves into an uneasy stillness. Inspired by butoh, we confront the grotesque.

Performance 3: Dressing Room -  Lula in conversation with Madeleine = BODIES UNRAVEL

Through this piece, the artists explore vulnerability as they strip the self, asking each other questions through textured touch, breath and movement.

Questioning personal and interpersonal relationships with the body. Trying to find answers by trusting in another body’s ability to care for your own.

We encourage ourselves to look within and quieten the mind. We turn to one another as a mirror, letting go into each other.
