Event description

Description

Come learn to cook a traditional Syrian meal guided by a Syrian refugee chef from your local community!

Your teacher Majeda Khoury is a Syrian refugee, originally from Damascus, Syria.

Your class gives you an intimate chance to hear her personal story, plus 100% of your class fee goes to Majeda as income, thanks to the sponsorship provided by Mercato Metropolitano!

The dishes Majeda will teach you how to cook are very traditional and well-known Syrian dishes. The starter, Harak Osbao, is a lentil and pasta dish flavoured with tamarind and pomegranate. The main course, Maqluba, is a rice, aubergine and lamb pilaf that is turned upside down for serving. It’s frequently eaten with plain yoghurt on the side. The dessert, Qatayef, is a dish full of mini pancakes stuffed with cream and decorated with pistachios.

Majeda is a women’s rights activist who arrived in the UK earlier this year. She believes that there is a relationship between cooking and love... and that preparing a meal for the one you love, combining your skills and your feelings to create something for them, can convey a lot. She has a real passion for cooking and she thinks that passion is one of the things that make her a beloved wife, creative Mom, and interesting friend.

The class will take 1.5 hours and after class, you’ll sit down and consume the product of your hard work!

The main course can be made vegetarian for the non-meat eaters, and by request, the starter can also be made gluten-free. Please indicate these preferences when buying tickets. The meat will be halal.

This event has been organised by the Syrian Forum in Britain and sponsored by Mercato Metropolitano.
