Cooking Up Community Meals in Shrewsbury
Date and time
Description
If you’re interested in supporting your community with free food and shared meals or reducing food waste, this event is for you.
We waste 30% of the food we produce, with huge impacts on the environment, at a time when so many families are struggling to put good food on the table. Food waste can be cut by sharing good leftover food from our stores and our homes, and by cooking creatively.
The idea of the meeting is to bring together everyone who wants to make a positive contribution to our environment and our community by cooking with surplus food - maybe setting up a pop-up community cafe or a cooking club.
The Food Hub collects food from lots of stores everyday and shares it between community groups like the Hospice and Food Bank Plus. At the weekend there is lots of surplus food not being used, so we’re calling all cooks help get this food into good use.
There’s lots already happening so we’ll start with speakers to set the scene and then see how volunteers could grow these ideas and fill in the gaps. For inspiration we have Tom from the fantastic community café OsNosh and Hannah from Shrewsbury Youth for Christ who runs the Belvidere Good Food Club.”
Then we’ll explore:
- How can we inspire people to feel confident about cooking with leftovers?
- Could we start a community café to show case cooking with leftovers?
Together, slowly and steadily we can make it happen!
