Description

Course Introduction

Approximately 1.2 million people are living with COPD in the UK, however it is estimated that one in eight people over the age of 35 has COPD which has not been properly identified or diagnosed! 10% of people with COPD are diagnosed for the first time when they present to hospital as an emergency and COPD is now the second highest cause of emergency admissions to hospital. Currently the total annual cost of COPD to NHS is over £1.2 billion.

Death rates from COPD in the UK are almost double the EU average with the mortality rate equaling that of acute myocardial infarction and in 2012, 29,776 people died from COPD in UK. Sadly 25% of people die within a year of admission and one in 12 during an emergency admission. 50% of people diagnosed with COPD are under the age of 65.

80 percent of people with COPD have at least one other long term condition and we should be identifying many more patients in primary care given the unique position primary care teams are in. Early identification and instigation of management strategies for COPD can modify lung function decline in the early stages of the disease and it is 10 times cheaper to the NHS to treat mild disease than advanced COPD.

This course is designed to give healthcare professionals new to COPD care an understanding of the prevalence and impact of COPD. Delegates will look at the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory tract and the pathophysiology, and management both pharmacological and non-pharmacological of COPD. This interactive day will focus on enabling delegates to deliver high quality care and assessment of patients in the primary care setting relating everything to QOF templates and 6 'C's of nursing practice. The day will provide the foundation for further learning in the care of patients with COPD - an area where health care professionals can make a real difference to a group who are so often overlooked.

This course is accredited by the Royal College of General Practitioners
