Event description

What could be better than escaping the new year blues & coming for some winter woodland fun to help us coppice?!

  • Help increase the biodiversity potential of this area and contribute to a largescale wilding project

  • Practice your tool skills and develop practical understanding of woodland management techniques

  • Take some freshly harvested wood home for your whittling projects, den building area, fire wood or Forest School activities

  • Hang out with groovy people, drink tea round the fire ...& there might even be some cake!?

No previous experience needed. We will provide you with tools to use and give you guidance.

What we will be doing (timings are approximate!)?

  • 10am – Arrive, have a cuppa round the campfire

  • 10.30am – Welcome, Intro to site & Tool talk

  • Cut, cut, cut!... Get the glint in your eye and chop down some trees. Or do a bit of brashing. Or sort and drag the materials. Or tend the fire. Or keep the kids occupied .... many jobs to choose from.

  • Lunch (please bring a packed lunch)

  • More chopping! Take a bundle home!

  • 3.30pm Tidy up, tool cleaning, look smug at the amount of work done!

  • Offsite by 4pm latest (you can leave earlier if you can only make part of the day) or by the time it gets dark!

If it is a large group and/or theres a need, we might also do some work in our woodland camp area - there are various jobs on our list like finishing the composting loo, building a bender and camp kitchen area!

The area of woodland we will be working in, is literally just a woodland. We will have the campfire going for warmth and hot drinks and rig shelters if it looks drizzly. Please be aware there are no toilets in this woodland so it will be a wild wee situation! We do have a composting loo (semi- built but functional!) in another section of woodland (a 2 minute drive away).

Please be aware that the work is quite physical, uses tools and requires a level of understanding and safety awareness. We are happy for older children who would be interested and able to undertake these tasks to join in, with the understanding that they are the responsibility of the parent/carer. Younger children may come along to the day but it might not be appropriate for them to undertake the tasks (we leave it to parent/carers discretion). As its a woodland (and theres a stream!) there are plenty of things to discover and play with. So we are thinking that children might like the opportunity to 'free roam' close to, but not in the coppice work area. Depending on numbers, perhaps a couple of adults could have the role of keeping an eye on the tribe, whilst other parents/carers work? A role which could be rotated as needed.

Due to the nature of the work we cannot have dogs free roaming through the coppice work area. However, they can be on site on a lead, or in vehicles. Please clean up after your dog.

The Location is a section of woodland within the West Acre estate just off the Gayton Road (B1153) going North from the A47. It is about halfway between swaffham and kings lynn. The google map is not showing the right place. We will attach a map to your booking email and on the day put out some banners/signs at the field entrance. Look for the dung beetle of 'Outrageous Nature'!

What you need to bring:

  • Warm clothing (do remember that lots of thin layers are warmer than fewer thick ones)

  • Waterproofs and sturdy waterproof footwear (like walking boots or steel toe capped boots, wellies might be a good idea - the area is a WET woodland)

  • Packed lunch & drink & mug (we will provide hot drinks and maybe even some cake!)

  • Any medication you need (asthma inhalers, epi pens etc)

Please make sure you provide us with a mobile contact number in your booking form in case the day needs to be cancelled for any reason e.g. extreme weather. If this occurs we will text you by 8.30am on that morning.
