Copyright and Open Access for Digital Collections: a Roundtable Discussion

In this third instalment of our International Series, leading thinkers in the digital copyright sphere will participate in a roundtable discussion, sharing their honest views on the purposes of copyright, the re-use of data and digital reproductions in collections, and the revenue, costs and hidden costs behind Open Access.

Towards a National Collection has invited an expert panel (to be announced) comprising members from different professional backgrounds. Each panellist will give a five-minute presentation of their current research and their contribution to the field, followed by a discussion on the above mentioned key themes.

Speakers

Giulia Dore (Research Fellow, University of Trento)

Dr. Giulia Dore is Research Fellow at the University of Trento, Faculty of Law, where she teaches Copyright Law and Art. She holds a PhD in Comparative and European Legal Studies (Doctor Europaeus) and has extensive international experience, mostly in the United Kingdom and the USA. Her research interests include the interplay of social and legal norms in the framework of intellectual property rights, the impact of digitisation on Galleries Libraries Archives & Museums (GLAM) and cultural heritage, and the broader development of Open Science.

Karin Glasemann (Digital Coordinator, Nationalmuseum Sweden)

As Chair of the Europeana Copyright Community Steering Group Karin seeks to aid practitioners in the cultural heritage sector to navigate copyright in their collections, to help them advocate for adequate institutional support around copyright, and to provide guidance around how to contribute to adequate legal frameworks in their countries. At Nationalmuseum, (Sweden’s museum of art and design), Karin initiated the Nationalmusuem’s Public Domain policy and several collaborations with Wikimedia Sweden, which boosted the Nationalmuseum’s digital presence.

Ariadna Matas (Policy Advisor, Europeana Foundation)

Ariadna contributes to the management and development of Europeana’s policies and frameworks with a strong focus on copyright, and supports their implementation throughout the Europeana Network. Ariadna studied law in Spain, Germany and France and has a Master’s in Intellectual Property Law. Before joining Europeana, Ariadna worked for the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) on copyright matters.

Melissa Gold Fournier (Head of Imaging Services and intellectual property, Yale Center for British Art)

Melissa Gold Fournier is Head of Imaging Services and Intellectual Property at the Yale Center for British Art, where she oversees digital imaging of the museum’s collections and activities, and provides technical and intellectual property expertise to digital projects at the Center and at Yale. Melissa has held successive positions of responsibility involving museum registration, collections digitization, online collections, and project management at the YCBA since 1998. Melissa is a graduate of Yale College, and completed an MBA with the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. She is chair of the PHAROS Consortium’s Intellectual Property Working Group, and a co-organizer of ImageMuse (imagemuse.org) and the Museum Intellectual Property Group (musip.io)

Andrea Wallace (Senior Lecturer in Law, the University of Exeter)

Andrea joined the University of Exeter as a Lecturer in Law in August 2017. She completed her PhD in Cultural Heritage Law with the CREATe RCUK (Centre Copyright and New Business Models in the Creative Economy) at the University of Glasgow in partnership with the National Library of Scotland. Andrea’s research explores legal issues surrounding copyright, cultural institutions, and the public domain. She frequently writes and presents on open culture and the impact that a claim to copyright in reproductions has on meaningful access to and reuse of our common cultural heritage in the public domain.
