Copyright and Trade Marks: an intro for startups and small businesses

As you build your business, you’re creating so much! From the words in your website, to your brand name and logo, your products themselves, new inventions perhaps – even the look of your packaging. In this workshop, we’ll give a brief overview of the different types of Intellectual Property (IP), then focus in on Copyright and Trade Marks, the two most common rights you can use. It’s never too early to start thinking about your IP, and a little planning now can help stave off problems in the future.

In this hour-long session, we’ll look at Copyright, which covers creative works (including words, text, images, photographs, software) and Trade Marks, which protect your brand (including names, slogans, logos etc)

• using other people's copyright

• trade marks
• what you can and can't register
• the trade mark registration process
• searching for similar/existing trade marks
• trade mark classification
• unregistered trade marks

By the end of this session, you’ll be better placed to identify the intellectual property in your business and see how you can use it as an asset.
