Mohammed Al-Gholmy BDS FDSRCS(ENG) BM MRCS(ED) FRCS(OMFS)

Mohammed is a Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, who is a registered Specialist with the General Medical Council and the GDC. He is dually qualified in both Dentistry and Medicine and has dual Fellowships in Dental Surgery and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He qualified in 1994 and since then has dedicated and limited his practice to Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Since completing his Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in England in 1998, he has gone on to obtain his Medical Degree from Southampton University followed by his Board Intercollegiate Certification in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, granting him Consultancy in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.Mohammed advanced his skills in dental implantology, facial deformity surgery and bone grafting while on a Fellowship to Bruges in Belgium. His training has taken him as far afield as Scotland, India and Belgium to finally settle in Portsmouth where his NHS Consultant practice includes all aspects of dentoalveolar surgery and oral medicine, facial deformity surgery, craniofacial trauma, oral & craniofacial implantology, salivary gland surgery and the management of skin cancer.

Raj Rattan MBE BDS MFGDP FFGDP Dip.MDE FICD FFFLM

Raj has been a general dental practitioner for over 30 years and has a wealth of experience as a multiple practice owner. He has enjoyed a portfolio career and is a former Strategic Associate Dean at the London Deanery. He has provided consultancy services to several public and private sector organisations including the NHS, Denplan, dental corporates and the Department of Health where he served as a Policy Adviser. He is the author/co-author of a number of textbooks and has lectured extensively throughout the UK and overseas including South Africa, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong on a wide range of topics. He was a part-time dento-legal consultant at Dental Protection for over 20 years before taking up his current role as Dental Director in 2016.Outside dentistry, his interests include motor-sport, writing and the performing arts. He is an award-winning magician and has been a member of the Magic Circle for over 20 years.

The aims of this course are:

• To develop delegate’s professional knowledge, understanding and competence in diagnosing oral cancer and other oral medical conditions.

• To develop delegate’s professional knowledge, understanding and competence in management of patients on bisphosphonates, anticoagulants and those patients with complex medical histories

• To ensure your team can identify and deal with professional, business and clinical risks. Then recognise the importance of their role in maintaining a strong legal and ethical approach

• To look at ways to manage patient complaints and review your procedures in line with GDC standards

• To develop their professional knowledge, understanding and competence in the field of clinical record keeping, in line with their identified personal learning requirements.

Objectives:

• How to prevent and recognise oral cancer.

• The Anatomy, Pathology & Differential Diagnosis

• The Signs & Symptoms of Oral Cancer

• What to do if you suspect oral cancer

• Appropriate management of patients on bisphosphonates and anticoagulants

• Diagnosing other oral lesions

• The importance of Legal and Ethical issues in practice

• The potential professional, business and clinical risks in practice

• The GDC standards and how the team can demonstrate and apply them in

Practice

• The dental professional with the rules and regulations regarding patient records.

• What patients complain about and the difficult conversations you have

• Ways to gain regular patient feedback to provide ideas for change and minimise the risk of complaints

• Tips on how to prevent complaints escalating

• Tips on how to deal with a patient complaint

Anticipated learning outcomes:

The learner will:

• Be able to assess the oral cancer risk of a patient.

• Be able to reduce the oral cancer risk.

• Be able to examine a patient for oral cancer

• Know when to refer suspected lesions.

• Understand the relevance of Bisphosphonates and anticoagulants to dental care, and provide appropriate precautions when treating them

• Be able to diagnose other oral lesions

• Be reminded of their GDC Standards for the Dental Team

• Have a greater appreciation of their responsibilities as GDC registered professionals

• Have an improved understanding of the type of risks that happen within practice

• Have greater confidence in dealing with customer complaints

• Have improved knowledge on how to resolve complaints and prevent them from escalating

• Have knowledge of the legal aspects of record keeping, and the requirements of regulatory authorities.

• Understand what constitutes a record.

• Understand what is required for a "good" record, and what the features are of a bad one.

• Understand entitlement to access patient records, and when they can be disposed.
