Event description

Description

  • By its nature, research in corpus linguistics engages widely with and contributes to other areas, within linguistics and language study and right across the arts and humanities (cultural studies, film and television studies, history etc.) and beyond (law, medicine, psychology, sociology etc.). We are interested in the outward facing aspect of corpus linguistics, including examples of corpus methods being used to throw light on questions beyond linguistics, and examples of corpus linguistics itself fruitfully drawing on theories and practices from other fields. The event will also provide a chance to meet and chat with fellow corpus linguists and potentially foster some cross-disciplinary links of our own.
  • Schedule (to be announced)
  • Invited presentation
  • Call for papers
    • We invite proposals for short work-in-progress talks (10 minutes, plus 5 minutes for questions). All researchers are welcome to submit a proposal; we particularly encourage Masters/PhD students and other early-career researchers, since the event offers an ideal opportunity to gain experience in academic presentations and acquire feedback from researchers in related fields. Talks should address the theme of ‘corpus linguistics and cross-disciplinarity’ in some way – however, we do not want to limit the ways in which this might be done!
    • Please send a short (c. 150 word) abstract to Ewan Hannaford (e.hannaford.1@research.gla.ac.uk), by 5pm on Friday 17 November. We aim to confirm acceptance within a week of this date.
  • Registration
    • To register, please email Ewan Hannaford (e.hannaford.1@research.gla.ac.uk), indicating your name, affiliation and research interests, and confirming whether or not you’d be happy for your details to be added to the CLiS membership list. The deadline for registration is Friday 1 December.
    • Tea/coffee will be provided during the morning. Please note that the event does not include lunch; however, a list of suggestions of good local places for lunch will be sent to registered delegates nearer the time.
    • Please spread the word of this event among colleagues and students who may be interested. There is no requirement to be a member of CLiS: you can become a member by simply attending CLiS events.
