Learn to deliver Supervision within various Models of Supervision, and within these, from a variety of trans-theoretical approaches.

About this event

The course aims to provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to deliver Clinical Supervision within various Models of Supervision, and within these, from a variety of trans-theoretical approaches. The course will also address the complexities related to delivering Clinical Supervision within an Organisational context. Lastly, tailoring the Supervision provided to Supervisees’ stages of development will also be extensively addressed.

The course will be delivered by experienced Tutors of differing modalities to reflect the transtheoretical nature of the learning. Tutors are experienced and qualified Supervisors who will be generous in sharing their own supervisory experiences in order to bring the learning to life. The group experience as well as the learning is important to ACT, and Tutors are also experienced group facilitators and Diploma Level facilitators.

This course should appeal to any Qualified Counsellors, Accredited Counsellors or Psychotherapists (must be 2 year post qualified) considering beginning the provision of Clinical Supervision or indeed enhancing existing Supervisory Practice.

Feedback has suggested that we should make applicants aware of any costs surrounding the course and subsequent supervisory practice. These are likely to be:

  • Payment of Supervision of Supervisory Practice
  • Possibly Membership with a professional body (if not already in place)
  • Insurance (often no additional cost if insurance for private therapy practice is in place. You must however make your insurer aware that you are providing supervision)
  • Ongoing CPD on completion of the course (autonomously chosen by you, but check professional bodies’ requirements
  • Supervisor Accreditation (if you decide to do this and if this is a category offered by your professional body).

Structure of the Course

There will be 42 hours tutor delivery over 6 days, followed by 2 tutor facilitated supervision groups of 1.5 hour duration spread over the following 6 months. Course Participants must make arrangements for individual supervision for their supervisory practice; this is an integral part of the course. The supervision practice placement must be supervised by a qualified and experienced supervisor at a ratio of 1 hour of supervision for every 6 hours of placement practice. A minimum of 20 hours of supervisory practice with 2 Supervisees must be completed in order to receive the Certificate.

In the event of a participant requiring longer than 3 years for completion (e.g. difficulty accessing supervisees, life circumstances, and change in employment), a written essay of 4,000 words must be submitted along with the case study that evidences how they have continued to meet with the aims, learning outcomes and performance criteria outlined below:


To skilfully adapt the process and content of supervision to meet with the Supervisee/Organisation’s requirements:

1. To learn to use quantitative and qualitative methodologies to provide feedback.

2. To address and facilitate concerns about supervisees’ ability to use supervision effectively.

3. To explore how to address and manage serious concerns about practice.

Learning Outcomes

1. Be able to employ principles which facilitate the supervisees’ learning and development.

2. Be able to promote ethical practice.

3. Be able to build competence in working with diversity.

4. Be able to skilfully adapt supervision to meet with the organisational and governance context.

5. Be able to form, maintain and end a supervisory relationship.

6. Be able to use quantitative and qualitative methodologies to gauge a supervisees’ level of competence.

7. Be able to reflect and act upon limitations in own knowledge and experience.

8. Be able to help supervisee deliver specific clinical skills within their practice of Supervision.

9. Be able to facilitate group supervision.

10. Be able to apply standards to own and Supervisees’ practice.

Methods of Assessment

The assessment of course Participants is ongoing throughout all aspects of the course. There is no final examination, as such, but a final case study. Course Participants must demonstrate their understanding of the entire course learning outcomes and demonstrate their competency in all performance criteria. The library/reference resources provided by ACT Counselling Services may be used to support and reference participants learning. Mastery of the learning outcomes and performance criteria will be evidenced using the following methods:

1. Reflective Journal related to learning, development and insights within and out-with the structure of the course.

2. Reflective writing on own level of competence in a Supervisory role.

3. Final case study providing a critical analysis of the models and approaches used in supervisory practice.

4. Audio recordings assessed during Clinical Supervision in relation to Supervisory Competency Scale.

5. Self-assessment (using Supervisory Competency Scale) of Supervisory Practice completed prior to Supervision and discussed with Supervisor during the session.

6. Tutor feedback within Group Supervision and Skills Practice elements of the course.

7. Supervisor’s report reflecting a minimum of 20 hours of Supervisory Practice and addressing fitness to practice.

8. Participation in classroom-based learning.

The Course Tutor will facilitate learning by:

1. Introducing participants to the Supervisory Competency Framework.

2. Ensuring Participants are aware of, and use audio or video recording, to assess Supervisory Practice within Supervision.

3. Being aware of and using educational approaches which facilitate participant learning.

4. Introduction and exploration of a variety of theoretical models of supervision, including Inskipp and Proctor, 7 eyed Model (Hawkins and Shohet), the Cyclical Model and trans-theoretical approaches.

5. Providing a theoretical basis for a case conceptualisation of supervisory practice.

In reflective writing Course Participants will:

1. Be encouraged and taught to reflect on their own capabilities and limitations in a supervisory role.

2. Draw and reflect upon learning from experiences in the taught elements of the course and make links with supervisory practice.

Within Group Supervision Participants will:

1. Develop the ability to facilitate group supervision.

2. Explore ethical frameworks, standards of practice and ethical dilemmas.

Within their own supervisory practice participants will:

1. Identify and explore the impact of organisation and governance on supervisory practice and how to facilitate and manage this.

2. Explore and identify values and skills which develop competence in working with diversity.

3. Identify and implement the skills required for the formation, maintenance and ending of a supervisory relationship.

4. Enable supervisee to develop clinical skills.

5. Be able to apply standards as stated by professional body.

Group Supervision Dates will be arranged with participants that will take place on day 6 of the course.

A final review/case study presentation day will also be arranged with participants on day 6 of the course.


Whether this training takes place online or in person is entirely dependent on COSCA and the Government Guidelines on COVID at the time. At this point in time, we cannot confirm either way, but hope to run it in person.
