This specialized class is for budding costume designers and makers. It is also perfectly timed to suit anyone who wishes to create a costume in time for Hallowe'en celebrations. It is also recommended for those who wish to improve their skills within costume and add to their portfolio.
Christine, the tutor wears many different costume hats... from carnival, circus, large scale productions, theatre, TV and film including making costumes for Seasons 1-4 of HBO's Game of Thrones. She has many links within the industry and generously gives past students introductions to opportunities. When it comes to getting a job in costume, a good recommendation is often the key.
Students will benefit from a wide range of knowledge and skills which can be tailored to suit their particular chosen area and costume budget. From first concept to full costume realization, when it comes to costume, the skies the limit! With lots of designer / maker tips sewn in for good measure!
Each class is 3 hours long so that we can cover a lot of ground in each session. Previous experience is sewing while recommended, is not essential. Due to the nature of this class, out of class development is encouraged.
We will cover the following:
Dissecting a script.
Creating a design board, and sketches.
Delivering a confident and assured costume presentation.
Creative concepts in pattern making, depending on your productions budget and timescale. When to use a bought pattern, develop your own, or improvise!
Choosing the best fabrics for your production.
From sketch to reality! - Costume creation.
Introduction to costume breakdown.
Sourcing for costume: hires, buys and makes.
Getting a foot in the door in the industry. With a wide range of projects under her belt, Christine has gathered many contacts, and often has personal projects and career opportunities that she can offer students to get involved in.
Students are encouraged to bring their concept for development to the first class. Class sizes are limited to 4 people so that learning is focused and fun.
Domestic sewing machines and overlocker are provided. You are welcome to bring your own equipment if you wish.
Please bring a selection of ideas for discussion at the first class.
