Event description

Description

Join the staff at Clyde Nursery School for their INSET day:

Count on it: Moving children's mathematical learning forward in the EYFS

Target audience: Those working in Nurseries and Reception classes, EYFS l,eaders, Maths Subject Leaders, Senior Management.

Course Description: This exciting, interactive session will focus on developing delegates’ own understanding of how children develop competency in mathematical learning and core ways in which adults can best support and extend this.

The core theme of the session will be how adults help maths to make sense to children by tuning into their interests and everyday activities and extending their mathematical thinking through these.

Aims: This course will:

  • Update delegate’s own subject knowledge in terms of what mathematical opportunities are important for children at this age, according to research.
  • Give opportunities to consider meaningful ways for capturing and recording children’s mathematical knowledge and understanding.
  • Explore what mastery in mathematics looks like in the EYFS and how adults can provide mathematical challenge for children
  • Consider how adults can interact with children in ways which extend, rather than shut down their mathematical thinking.
  • Give delegates opportunities to reflect upon the balance between the different types of mathematical learning that occurs in their own setting, both adult-led and child-initiated, and consider the quality of each.
  • Focus on the important role that both adults and the learning environment play in children’s mathematical learning.

Trainer: Kym Scott:

About Kym Scott

Before becoming a freelance consultant, Kym Scott was Early Years Lead in the London Borough of Lewisham, where she worked in an advisory capacity for 15 years. This enabled her to support many schools and settings in a variety of circumstances and to informally research the key elements that make for excellent outcomes for children.

Kym is an associate consultant for Early Education and also works closely with national training organisations such as Early Excellence. In the past she has been a maths trainer for the BEAM organisation (Be a Mathematician) as well as Strategic Lead locally for the Communication, Language and Literacy Development programme.

Her international work has taken her to Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo, Chicago, Kazakhstan, France and Switzerland and she is becoming a regular visitor to Finland, in order to develop her own professional understanding of the education system there, which she has a particular interest in.

Kym is one of the admin team and keynote speakers behind the highly regarded Keeping Early Years Unique Facebook group, a vastly growing support network with a membership of more than 35,000, created for those wishing to develop child led, play based learning further in their schools and settings.

Kym also sits on the editorial board of Early Years Educator magazine. As well as contributing articles for professional journals such as this she has co-authored a number of books including the widely acclaimed publication 'A Place to Learn' which has sold extensively both in this country and overseas.

In 2013 Kym was commissioned by the Department for Education as an external moderator for the EYFS Profile and has sat on working parties responsible for the development of materials linked to the Profile. She has also been involved in two All Party Parliamentary Groups; those for Conception to Age Two, and for Parents and Families.

Kym provides consultancy, training, workshops and keynote speeches on a number of subjects related to early years practice, but is especially passionate about children leading their own learning and how adults can best support this.
