Ever since the UK stunned the world by voting to leave the EU on June 23, governments in Edinburgh, London and across Europe have been vying to defend their interests. With the long game of departure negotiations underway, the backdrop is severe economic uncertainty and debates around migration which have fuelled populist movements across the continent and beyond. Join our panel of leading academic experts in the first of a major new series of public events as they answer questions and discuss the threats and opportunities which lie ahead.
Professor Anton Muscatelli (Economics and Higher Education)
Anton Muscatelli is Principal of the University of Glasgow. He has been a consultant to the World Bank and European Commission, advises the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee on monetary policy and is chair of the Scottish Government's Standing Council on Europe.
Dr Uta Staiger (European Politics/Modern History)
Uta Staiger is Executive Director of the European Institute at University College London and one of its founder members. Originally from Germany, she is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Dr Maria Fletcher (EU Law)
Maria Fletcher is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Law at the University of Glasgow, specialising in EU law including immigration. She is a member of the Steering Group of the University of Glasgow's Refugee Asylum and Migration Network, and is also the Director of the Scottish Universities Legal Network on Europe.
Professor Andrea Nolan (Sciences/Higher Education)
Andrea Nolan is the Principal of Edinburgh Napier University and Convenor of Universities Scotland. A qualified veterinary surgeon and leading authority on animal pain, she is a trustee of Medical Research Scotland and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
Chair: Dr James Rodgers
James Rodgers is a former Reuters and BBC reporter whose 20-year career included postings in Moscow, Gaza and Brussels. Now leading the MA programme in International Journalism at City, University of London, he is most recently author of Headlines from the Holy Land: Reporting the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict (2015).
