Event description

Description

On Sunday 20th May we will hold Lincoln’s first “Countryside Show in the City” event in the Aboretum. This family fun filled day will bring the whole community together to celebrate all things food and farming; helping city residents experience a taste of the countryside. 33% of our population now live in towns and cities, 1 in 5 never get out to the countryside. 1 in 3 children have never heard a cow or sheep make a noise in real life. People are becoming increasingly disconnected from the countryside and although sited in a very rural county, Lincoln is no exception. Barriers such as poverty, unemployment, mental health, transport and cost further limit people experiencing the countryside. 10 areas in Lincoln fall within the most 10% deprived nationally. Lincoln has high rates of child and adult obesity, low activity levels, and an increasing number of new arrival communities.

The event will include the following different areas focussing on key themes encompassing food, farming and the countryside.

1) Community- community groups will have stalls to promote their services, run taster sessions and encourage volunteering opportunities

2) Environmental Sustainability area will bring together organisations to help people learn about environmental issues including conservation, wildlife, waste, recycling and climate change

3) Food, Farming and Countryside area will include tractors, farm animals (Ark Farms), countryside crafts such as spinning, wood turning; milking and food trade stands. This will be a unique experience for people to get hands on and learn about how their food is produced.

4) A Main Ring with a range of displays including the ‘Sheep Show’, dog agility, archery and marching bands

5) Food Trade Stands

6) Produce, Arts and Crafts Show (encouraging local schools to submit entries and embed activities into their curriculum).

The event will bring together people from different social, economic and cultural backgrounds, giving them a fun, inspiring, educational day out with opportunities for community cohesion and reconnecting with the countryside, food and farming. The event will help meet the outcomes in the Abbey Neighbourhood Plan, Lincoln Food Strategy and provide a “pop up window” of what the Hillside project (being developed by Green Synergy; transforming a derelict site into an accessible community garden and city farm) will provide in the future.
