Event description

Description

NWG and SPACE are delighted to co-host a free learning event on the impact of child exploitation on parents and families. There is increased awareness of the trauma which affects family members of those children abused through all forms of child exploitation.

Opened by Anne Coffey MP – chair of the All-Parliamentary Party Group for Runaway and Missing Children and Adults, the event will provide delegates the opportunity to hear first-hand from four parents whose children have been exploited what problems they encountered trying to protect their children and what lessons agencies can learn.

Further input will be provided by SPACE and a parent affected by child sexual exploitation who have both become activists and drivers for change, influencing policy both locally and nationally.

As well as hearing from speakers with lived experience of the issue, practitioners and academics will be presenting on emerging approaches to tackling exploitation and supporting families. Those already confirmed as contributing include Dez Holmes (Research in Practice), Carlene Firmin (University of Bedfordshire), Lucy Dacey (The Children’s Society), Nick Marsh (Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse), Jane Hunter and Josie Allen (Missing People) and Dr Romana Farooq (Principal Clinical Psychologist & Clinical Lead, Forensic CAMHS & The Chilren's Secure Estate).

The event will also provide a networking opportunity for professionals and tabletop discussions where delegates will be able to reflect and share their own practice as well as considering the key messages from the speakers.

As co-facilitators of the event, The NWG and SPACE hope to utilise the day to raise awareness of parental engagement in safeguarding approaches and provide ongoing support to those agencies in attendance to meet the needs of families affected by child exploitation.

This one-day event is aimed at strategic and operational leads rather than frontline practitioners. The NWG currently offers an Experts by Experience one-day training event for caseworkers to better understand the impact of child exploitation on family members. Details can be found at https://www.nwgnetwork.org/

We anticipate demand for places to be high so please book early to avoid disappointment.
