Event description
Third in a series of webinars examining human rights issues that have been brought into sharp focus by the COVID-19 pandemic.

About this Event

Evidence is mounting that COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting people from Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic (BAME) Communities. One study shows that BAME people accounted for 63% of COVID-19 fatalities in health workers. While it is difficult to be definitive about why this is the case researchers have pointed to socio-economic factors playing a significant role in the greater exposure of BAME people to the virus.

At the same time the unjust killing of George Floyd, which was driven by deeply engrained racial prejudice, has sparked protests all over the world, including here in Northern Ireland. Despite putting in place social distancing protocol, protestors were targeted with police fines. This policing is currently the subject of an investigation by the Ombudsman.

This webinar will discuss this double edged sword and will seek to give BAME community leaders a platform to lead on these important conversations.
