General Activity Description:
This workshop is designed to increase a ballet teacher’s confidence and ability to create and devise suitable enchaînements which support syllabus content and student progression and achievement across all RAD Graded levels. Participants will identify key vocabulary and devise enchaînements which train specific aspects of technique and execution, gaining an understanding of how to build technical skills, and develop performance skills and musicality in their students.
Ahead of the workshop, participants will be required to collate a playlist of musical accompaniment covering different time signatures, tempi and musical styles, and which could be used for the creation of enchaînements as part of the workshop.
Aims:
The aims of this workshop are:
- To gain knowledge and understanding of how to break down RAD syllabus settings
- To improve participants confidence in creating enchaînement using a range of musical rhythms
- To share and discuss ideas on creating effective and imaginative preparatory exercises and enchaînement to enhance and support syllabus learning.
Learning Outcomes:
Participants will be able to:
- Have knowledge and understanding of approaches to breaking down syllabus settings
- Have a knowledge and understanding of how music choices can affect and influence the learning process and performance product
- Have gained insights into some of the different approaches which can be applied to the teaching of RAD syllabus settings
- Have the ability to create preparatory exercises and enchaînement which support and enhance the learning and teaching of RAD Graded syllabi
Course outline:
Part 1: Primary to Grade 4
- Introduction and exploration of breaking down syllabus settings to assist student learning, technical development and progression
- Exploration and creation of enchaînement to develop specific aspects of ballet technique
- Exploration and creation of enchaînement to develop aspects of the Music & Performance examination criteria
Part 2: Grade 5 to Grade 8
- Introduction and discussion on how free enchaînment can support and enhance the learning and teaching of RAD syllabi settings for students working at higher levels
- Exploration and creation of enchaînement to develop specific areas of ballet technique
- Exploration and creation of enchaînement to develop aspects of performance and style
Recommendation preparation:
Participants will be recommended to bring to the workshop a playlist of musical accompaniment covering different time signatures, tempi and musical styles. The playlist is suggested to contain a minimum of 6 tracks, and may cover a wide range of musical styles or genres. Playlists may be complied on a mobile device (iPod, iPhone, tablet etc)

Vivian started her ballet training under her father, Stephen Kwok as a toddler. In 1977, she went to England to further her study in dance at the Royal Academy of Dance, where she was trained as a teacher in ballet, national dance, modern dance and ballroom. She was awarded the Licentiate and Associate in ballet of Royal Academy of Dance, Licentiate in national dance and Associate in modern dance and ballroom of Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. Vivian also attained numerous Choreography Awards in modern dance section in the Hong Kong Schools Dance Festival for the production of Dragon Boat Race (2000), If I Were A Tree (2002) and If You Can Change My Life (2003).
Vivian is an adjudicator for the Hong Kong Schools Dance Festival, an examiner of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, an external examiner of the Hong Kong University SPACE, a subject specialist of the HKCAAVQ and an examiner of the Royal Academy of Dance. Vivian was also trained at the Trinity College of Music (London) for piano performance. In 1990, she was the champion of the Open Section in the Hong Kong Yamaha Election Festival and represented Hong Kong in international competitions.
Vivian holds a Bachelors degree in Applied Computing and a Master Degree in Education. Vivian believes that Dance Education, which helps to stimulate self-expression and increase one’s observation power, is essential for our new generation. Her School adopts a learner-oriented approach for realisation of all-rounded personal development in its students. It aims to develop students’ creativity and to enhance their self-confidence through continuous participation in public performances.
