About this event

General Activity Description:

This one day practical studio-based course will provide ballet teachers with a good understanding and knowledge of all the Female development exercises and variations from Discovering Repertoire Levels 2 and 3.

Variation 1 from Coppélia (Act ll; Swanilda, Spanish) and Variation 2 from Giselle (Act l from the Peasant Pas de Deux) from Level 2 and Variation 1 from The Sleeping Beauty (Act lll, Princess Florine) and Variation 2 from Paquita (Act l, 1st Variation from the Pas de Trois) from Level 3 will be covered.

The storylines, with some historical information about the different ballets, and specifically these Variations, will be discussed. Participants will gain insights into the concepts which underpin the structure, content and teaching of Discovering Repertoire which provides flexibility in how each of the units is delivered (e.g. as stand-alone units or in conjunction with each other). The course will also provide practical, technical, artistic and musical insights into the teaching of these development exercises and variations in Discovering Repertoire Levels 2 and 3.

Aims:

  • Equip ballet teachers with knowledge and understanding of the vocabulary and technique employed in the Female development exercises and variations from Discovering Repertoire Levels 2 and 3;
  • Enhance ballet teachers’ knowledge and understanding of the classical ballet repertoire in Discovering Repertoire Levels 2 and 3;
  • Provide ballet teachers with practical, technical, artistic and musical insights in the teaching of the Female development exercises and variations in Discovering Repertoire Levels 2 and 3.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the course, you will:

  • Have knowledge and understanding of teaching the Female development exercises and variations from Discovering Repertoire Levels 2 and 3;
  • Have insight into the practical, technical, artistic and musical concepts of the Female development exercises and variations from Discovering Repertoire Levels 2 and 3, and how the content can be adapted for a wide range of learners.

    Professor Tina Chen

    Chief Representative of the Royal Academy of Dance (China);

    Founding Member and former Head of Dance at Tong Ji University, College of Arts and Media;

    Committee Member of the Chinese Ministry of Education, Higher Education Advisory Committee (Music and Dance );

    Tutor and Module Convenor on the RAD Professional Dancers Teaching Diploma (China);

    Practical Teaching Supervisor on RAD DDTS and CBTS programme;

    CPD tutor on a variety of RAD CPD courses.

    A graduate of Beijing Dance Academy (Affiliated Junior School majoring in Ballet) and the Royal Ballet School Teachers Training Course, and a holder of dual master degrees, Tina has been teaching extensively for over 32 years and her students includes toddlers to pre-professionals who are winners of international ballet competitions and now artists in professional companies both at home and abroad. Since 2005, Tina has devoted most of her time to the training of ballet teachers and has been instrumental in the re-introduction of the RAD into mainland China, and in the setting up of the infrastructure of RAD teacher training in China.
