Description

Psychological trauma is something we all are likely to experience in our lives, although not all of us develop symptoms. Nevertheless, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects around 5% of the population in the UK. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are stressful or traumatic experiences that can have a huge impact on children and young people throughout their lives. ACE’s are associated with chronic ill health in later life such as the development of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and ultimately premature death. Early trauma is also associated with serious cognitive and emotional problems.
When trauma, any kind of trauma, occurs in a person’s life, the trajectory of their life path changes. Their life changes.
We are used to therapeutic approaches that treat traumatised clients as an individual, and it is becoming much more understood about the neurological impacts of psychological trauma on the brain of an individual. Yet trauma can be a collective experience, in which families and communities are affected. We also need to think about the socio-political contexts in which trauma occurs and about how social conditions relate to mental health.
In this workshop we will explore trauma from the micro context of neurology and biology to the macro context of society, considering the impact of trauma on individuals, couples, families and communities. We will begin to explore how as therapists and counsellors, we might helpfully position ourselves in relation to clients who have experienced trauma, identify useful interventions and also consider our wider responsibilities to reduce the impact of trauma within our own communities.
