Event description

Description

Although the analysis of sources is now a compulsory part of all A-level History curricula, the study of authentic documents by students is unusual. At the People’s History Museum in Manchester we have been working on the rich collection of documents housed in the Labour History Archive relating to the early years of Bolshevik rule, and have selected some of the most interesting for a unique teaching resource for A-level students. The resource is designed to be used alongside an archive-based research session, where students will get the opportunity to study the original documents with the archivists and a subject specialist.

We believe that for all students of Russian history, the experience of handling authentic documents will bring the period alive, helping them to develop their analytical skills and extending their knowledge through rarely seen documents. For students planning to continue studying history at university, these activities will give them invaluable archive experience.

This CPD event will introduce the teachers to some of the sources used in the teaching resource and will also explore other ways in which the museum can be used to enhance A-level teaching. The morning will be divided into 4 main sessions:

  • Introductions to the Museum by Andy Hoyle (Learning Officer) and the Archive by Darren Treadwell (Archive Assistant).
  • Workshop using the original sources led by Bob Dinn, who has researched and devised the teaching resource (former A-level history teacher from 6th form colleges)
  • Refreshments (hot drink and a scone)
  • Guided tour of the museum, covering the full range of the collection
  • Plenary session – discussing the uses of archives and museum collections in A-level teaching

All participants will be given a selection of the sources and questions at the end of the event.

The cost of the event is £12. This is refundable if a group booking is made by 31 July 2017 for student archive sessions in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.
