Event description

Description

The international development sector is urgently reviewing and enhancing safeguarding policy and practice following a wave of disclosures about sexual misconduct and highly critical media coverage. Public trust in the work of the sector has been put in serious jeopardy.

Alongside transparent measures to improve safeguarding and continuing to deliver both life-saving humanitarian work and life-improving development projects, the sector must proactively boost public confidence and understanding in its work.

The media is a key route to achieving this. However, even before the recent coverage of abuse, elements of the media were highly critical of international aid. So how can the sector rebuild trust and what role can the media play in future? Is there need to address how the sector communicates the vital work it does?

On 24th April, the Cross Party Group on International Development will explore these issues with representatives from the media and international development sectors in Scotland.

Leading figures from the international development sector in Scotland will discuss the crisis of confidence faced by the sector, what it means for the future of aid, and how the sector can ensure the positive impact of its work is better communicated.

Media experts will offer their insights on the media’s approach to date, why some outlets pick up on certain stories and others don’t, and give their insights on how the sector can communicate better with the public so that they are aware and gain a better understanding of the importance of the delivery of aid in some of the world's most challenging contexts.

Join us and offer your insights as the sector confronts these critical challenges.
