Event description
Big business has a massive role to play in tackling global poverty, but profit often comes first. What can be done?

About this Event

In today’s globalised world, big business has become more powerful than ever. While business can play a role in tackling poverty, more often than not – particularly in the case of multi-national companies – profit comes first, with human rights and environmental protection a poor second.

With a new generation of trade deals also taking precedence over these vital social and environmental protections, what is needed to tip the balance back towards more power for governments, communities and citizens?

At this meeting we'll be joined by Liz Murray, head of Scottish campaigns at social justice campaigning organisation Global Justice Now, who will be talking about how the new generation of trade deals are changing the rules of global governance, how they are handing more power than ever to big business and the impact this is having on governments’ ability to protect human rights, workers and the environment.

Joanne O'Neill Policy Officer at SCIAF will talk about how business is impacting on vulnerable communities and alert attendees to the UN Binding Treaty on Business and Human Rights.

We'll also be joined by visiting Zambian National, Fr. Leonard Chiti, Provincial of the Zambia-Malawi Province of the Jesuits, who will outline his experience of business and the impact on human rights/the environment in Zambia.

Join us for this important discussion and find out what MSPs and members of the public can do to raise awareness and mobilise action.

Please note, we have prepared a briefing in conjunction with Global Justice Now and SCIAF that outlines the issues we'll be discussing and provides some asks for MSPs.

You can download the briefing here.

We encourage you to contact your MSP, constituency or regional, share the briefing with them and ask them to join us. This is the best way to ensure good MSP attendance at this meeting. If you are unsure who your MSP is, you can find out here.
