MAKERVERSITY SKILLSHARE WITH MEADES DESIGN

Crafting a Circular Product: Designing with Plastic Waste

This workshop is an introduction into the process of converting household plastic waste, specifically recycled Polypropylene (PP) into a valuable material resource. You will get the opportunity to shred and melt down your own household plastic waste and learn the necessary steps into how to form this material into a product.

At the end of the session, you will be able to take home a collection of well-refined objects that you made using 100% recycled plastic.

What Experience do I need?

This is aimed at adults with any level of craft or design skills. You may be complete beginners with an interest in sustainability, or expert product designers with ambition to move into a different material specialism.

What will I make?

You will be melting down waste plastic – specifically Polypropylene – and pressing the material into ready-made moulds. Using different colours and crafting techniques, you will be able to hand-make a selection of objects all with different textures and colours.

Who will be teaching me?

Tom Meades is a 3D designer, specializing in sustainable material and process exploration. He has a BA degree in 3D Design & Craft from The University of Brighton, as well as professional experience as a product designer. Tom hopes that in the future, people will be able to develop high-quality products within their own home, simply using waste material.

Do I need to bring anything?

We advise that you bring along as much clean PP as possible.

Example of PP products (Recycling Number 5):

- Yoghurt tubs, Cups, Juice bottles, Straws, Hangers, Plant pots, Food containers (And many more!)

If you already have your own heatproof gloves and a safety mask, then we advise you to bring them. We will mainly be working outside so there will be no fumes trapped indoors.
