Event description

Description

While entrance is free, donations are appreciated (£5 per person suggested) and can be made at the event.

What is it about Doug Johnstone and gravity? “Crash Land” involves a plane crash; “The Jump” a suicide off the Forth Bridge; “Tombstoning” a fall off a cliff, and “Smokeheads” a van tumbling down a hillside. For most there is a concomitant fall from grace and a black hole sucking them in deeper and deeper (though some eventually find redemption, even if not in the way you’d expect). However, even among the violence and despair there is a vein of black humour. Come and hear Doug discuss his works and follow the path from his PhD in nuclear physics leading to his characters being brought to their knees. If time permits, he’ll discuss his inspirations and future plans. Don’t worry about g-force and being crushed by the bleakness of his writing – we have our own anti-gravity device in the form of a glass of fairtrade wine and may even end with a song or two to lift our spirits.

Doug is a writer, musician and journalist. His eighth novel,Crash Land”, was published in November 2016. His previous book,The Jump”, was shortlisted for the McIlvanney Prize for Best Scottish Crime Novel.

Doug is also a singer, musician and songwriter, and has released two solo EPs https://dougjohnstone.bandcamp.com/

Doug has a PhD in nuclear physics and previously worked designing radars. He grew up in Arbroath and now lives in Portobello with his wife and two children.

Thank you to Scotmid for their very generous sponsorship of Fairtrade wines
