Event description
Learn how to create high-quality short films with your smart phone or tablet & simple editing apps. Series of three remote workshops.

About this Event

Join us for a series of three introductory-level remote workshops delivered via Zoom (with a one-to-one support option).

Work with award-winning filmmakers to develop your skills and confidence in creating short film content for your website and social media channels — with the equipment you have — to connect with your audiences, participants, and communities.

Over three weeks, learn how to plan, capture and edit high-quality video and sound to help deliver and promote your work online, using smart phones / tablets, low-cost microphones, and simple editing apps.

You can book just the workshops, or book the workshops plus one-to-one remote support to help with your specific kit and project questions.

Tuesday 20th October 10.30am-12.30pm Workshop 1: Developing your ideas to engage people

We'll think about who you're trying to engage, what you want them to experience, and what you want them to do next.

We'll consider what the 'story' is, how you might tell it to your audience in an engaging and appropriate way, and the visuals and sound you might use.

We'll start to look at capturing video and sound on mobile devices, and outline some key features and ways of working to help capture the best content with your device.

Tuesday 27th October 10.30am-12.30pm Workshop 2: Planning and capturing the best pictures and sound

We'll think about how you might use visual storytelling, and different types of sound, to communicate with your audience.

We'll look at composition, using simple available lighting, and different types of shots and angles.

We'll explore how to capture the best quality sound, including the benefits and limitations of low-cost microphones.

Tuesday 3rd November 10.30am-12.30pm Workshop 3: Editing with simple mobile apps

We’ll look at the principles of editing video and audio, and how to put them together to create the experience you planned for your audience.

We’ll look at how to make the most of simple, free or low-cost, editing apps to shape your edit.

We’ll talk about the files you need to create to put your finished work on different online platforms.

One-to-one remote support add-on (during the period 20th October to 6th November)

We'll work with you over two half-hour Zoom or Facetime calls to help with your kit, workflow, or project-related questions. The calls might include live demos or short tutorials of kit or app features or processes.

We'll schedule the sessions with you in advance to take place during the period of the workshop series.

We'll ask you to send us your questions before the sessions so we can prepare for the calls and make the best use of your time.

Here's some feedback from one of our one-to-one clients:

"Your advice was invaluable and succinct, explaining tech information in a very accessible and helpful way.  You gave good advice on so many aspects and were able to answer every question I had.  It enabled me to go ahead with confidence and finish off the video to a high standard "

Additional information and booking questions:

Please note: These workshops are for individuals. We also love to help organisations with training and CPD - please get in touch (nick@nick-fogg.co.uk) so we can discuss your needs.

Zoom: The workshops will be delivered via Zoom. Log in details will be sent to you in advance via email.

If you haven’t used Zoom before, please download and try Zoom before the workshop.

Kit: These introductory workshops are to help you learn how to create high-quality content with the equipment you already have. You’ll need a smart phone or tablet. And an editing app which works with your device(s)* eg iMovie (Mac / iOS), Adobe Rush (iOS+Android), or similar.

*Please make sure that the app works with your kit in advance of the workshops.

It will also be useful (but not essential) if you have:

  • a microphone that plugs into your device — eg there’s one on the cable of many earphones
  • earphones or headphones
  • a tripod for your phone / tablet

A bit about you. After you've booked we'll ask you to tell us:

Which industry do you work in?

Please describe the work you do:

Please tell us a bit about your filmmaking experience so far:

What equipment / editing app do you have?

What are you hoping to learn from the course?

If you're booking one-to-one remote support, please tell us your availability during the period of the workshops.

Accessibility: We want to make this training as inclusive and accessible as we can. Is there anything we need to know to help with this?

If so it would be really useful if we can have a chat before the sessions. Please let us know the best way to get in touch.
