Create Space - Bringing creative calm to the Fringe

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the Fringe and immerse yourself in a calming environment designed to inspire your creativity.

Take part in guided art and writing based exercises or do your own thing with the arts materials all provided in a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. Hot drinks and snacks provided too!

The space will be held by art therapist Sarah McMahon and dramatherapist Abigail Nelson, resident therapists at the Creative Arts Therapies Space, who will be on hand to offer creative inspiration and guidance.

Drop in for as long as you need, and leave feeling refreshed and ready to hit some more fab fringe festivities!

Frequently asked questions

What is the accessibility of the space?

Unfortunately the space is not currently wheelchair accessible. There are two steps inside the space. There are two bathrooms available (gender neutral) and free street parking (limited). CATS is a queer friendly space and operates with a zero-tolerance policy for any kind of discrimination.

Are children allowed?

Need to bring your little one? Children welcome with accompanying adults.

What if I'm rubbish at art and have no experience in writing?

We believe in the power of bad art making!! Absolutely no experience is required to have a relaxing and fun time here. There will be guided exercises for you to do if you don't know where to start.

Do I need to buy a ticket in advance or can I just turn up?

Getting your ticket in advance is much appreciated so we know how many folks to expect in each slot, but you're welcome to turn up on the day (contactless card or bank transfer will be accepted on the day).

Hello! My name is Abigail, I'm a qualified dramatherapist in Edinburgh who runs creative wellness events, walks, retreats and projects. I take inspiration from nature, astrology, myth and Celtic tradition to facilitate connection to the self, to others and to the natural world. My events include one-off creative wellness events (which often include meditation, storytelling, art-making, journalling and more), monthly wellness walks in Edinburgh/Midlothians (where we discover and explore monthly unique themes), and three-day creative wellness retreats (the first in the Highlands in November 2022 and the second in Loch Lomond in April 2023).
