This course is designed for people who already have some experience of coaching, for example anyone who has undertaken one of RD1st’s half or one-day coaching workshops, including as part of the Clore Short Course, Clore Fellowship or engage Extend leadership programme. The course has been piloted with various groups over the past two years as an in-house course, and we are delighted that Yorkshire Dance have offered to host an open course in Leeds in June 2017.
The course aims to provide an opportunity to practice and refine coaching skills through Action Learning and to explore some of the ways you might use Action Learning, including by setting up your own ‘set’.
By the end of the day you will have:
- Refreshed and recapped on core coaching skills and principles.
- Developed an understanding of the origins, principles, uses and practices of Action Learning.
- Practised several ‘rounds’ of Action Learning, with participants having the opportunity to facilitate a set.
- Explored common facilitation challenges and how to handle them.
- Begun planning how to set up an Action Learning set.
The session has a strong emphasis on practising your skills and learning from your experience – as you might expect from Action Learning! There will be a mixture of training, practice of skills and reflective sessions, as well as a short action planning session at the end to help you decide how to move forwards with your coaching practice and Action Learning.
The topics we cover include:
- Recap on key coaching skills and GROW
- The origins, uses, practices and protocols of Action Learning
- The RD1st model of Action Learning
- The role of the facilitator in Action Learning
- ‘Contracting’ as a group.
‘RD1st recently helped Yorkshire Dance introduce coaching skills across our team. It has been an extremely positive and supportive process for us all and we are pleased to host an opportunity for others to discover this powerful tool to support individual and business development.’
Andrea Smart, Administrative Director, Yorkshire Dance

Frequently Asked Questions
I have done an RD1st half or full day course before - what would this course offer me?
This course is designed to build on our half and one-day introductory courses. The first part of the morning session recaps the core skills and approaches and provides opportunity for you to practice and receive feedback on your coaching, extending and refreshing your experience and skills.
I have not done an RD1st half or full day course before – is this course for me?
This course assumes some experience of coaching skills and principles, but this does not have to be through attending one of our previous courses. You may have gained this experience through Action Learning or other coaching training. The morning session starts with a recap of skills and approaches, before moving onto use Action Learning so there is an opportunity to refresh your skills and familiarize yourself with RD1st approach to coaching.
If you have never done any coaching or Action Learning then we would advise trying one of our Introduction to Coaching one-day workshops before attending this course.
