Join silversmith Charlotte Tollyfield at Yorkshire Artspace, Persistence Works for a 2 day hands-on smithing skills workshop! Learn the specialist silversmithing art of hand raising and create a beautiful hanging planter using traditional hammer techniques to raise a copper bowl. You will then make a chain cradle from which to hang your bowl, before planting it up ready to take home and display. This in-person event is a great introduction for beginners and perfect practice for those wanting to increase their skill. Over the course of each day Charlotte will lead you through every step of the process and support you in your making. At the end of the two days you’ll take your beautiful piece away with you to proudly display at home or gift to someone special.
Tea, Coffee, biscuits and fruit will be provided throughout the 2 days. Each day there will be a break for lunch, and you can choose to bring a packed lunch or take advantage of one of the local cafes including Kollective Kitchen, Tamper and Showroom.
Additional Info
Most of this course is centered around hammer work which can be quite physically demanding. While it is suitable for complete beginners, it is important that you have a reasonable level of strength and stamina in your arms and hands, and are comfortable standing for most of the day.
For safety reasons this workshop is for 18+ only.
Location
The workshop will take place in the Silver Space facility at Yorkshire ArtSpace’s Persistence Works studio complex in the heart of Sheffield city centre. A specialist facility for contemporary silversmithing in the north providing space for teaching classes, short term bench hire and settled space for professional silversmiths.
About Charlotte
Charlotte Tollyfield is a professional silversmith with over 15 years’ experience, designing and making her own contemporary silverware and copper pieces that she exhibits throughout the UK. She also takes on both private and corporate commission work. This has included the 2018 St. Leger Stakes trophy, and the Barber Emeritus ceremonial goblets for the Worshipful Company of Barbers in London. Charlotte began offering silversmithing courses in 2017 from her own workshop within Yorkshire Artspace’s Persistence Works, focusing on the key skills of this ancient and noble trade, including hand raising, forging and saw piercing.
Frequently asked questions
All materials and plants are included in the ticket price and all tools and equipment will be provided. Refreshments will also be provided, and include tea, coffee, fruit and biscuits. Work aprons, gloves and ear defenders are also available if required.
The course will take place over 2 days, on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd June 2025, and will be approximately 7.5hrs long each day, from 9:30am – 5pm with a 45 min lunch break.
Tea, coffee, fruit and biscuits will be provided. Please bring a packed lunch or be prepared to pop out and get something locally. There is a selection of good cafes situated locally, such as Kollective Kitchen at Site Gallery, Tamper Coffee at Sellers Wheel, and the Showroom Cafe Bar.
The maximum number of participants is 4. In order for the course to run in the Silver Space workshop the minimum number of participants is 2. However, in the event of there being only one person booked on the course, it will run in Charlotte's own studio also located at Persistence Works.
In the unlikely event of Charlotte or Yorkshire Artspace having to cancel the event, you will be given a full refund. If you choose to cancel your booking, you must do so more than 7 days before the event, and your refund will be subject to Eventbrite fees.
The closest car park is Sydney Street NCP. There are other NCP car parks nearby on Eyre Street and Furnival Gate, as well as large APCOA and Q-Park multi-storey's on Eyre Street and Charles Street respectively. There is some on-street parking directly outside Persistence Works on Brown Street.
Yes. Persistence Works is within 10 minutes walk of Sheffield's central train and bus stations. It is also within 15 minutes walk of any of the city centre tram stops at City Hall, Cathedral, Castle Square, Fitzalan Square and Sheffield Train Station.
Unfortunately, due to the set up of the workshop and the equipment, the course is not suitable for wheelchair users.
Please come in suitable comfortable clothing for a workshop environment. Sturdy footwear with no open toes or heals is essential. Long hair will need to be tied back. You may also wish to bring a wrist or elbow support if you feel you may need it. If you wear them - remember to bring your glasses!
