Welcome to the second BB-REG-NET Workshop 'Creating a favourable regulatory environment for bio-based materials'
Date: Tue July 01 2025
Time: 10:30 -16:30
Location: The Milner, York
Come join us for an exciting day filled with discussions, networking, and learning at our first BB-REG-NET Workshop.
BB-REG-NET is a pioneering network of experts from academia, industry, policy, regulatory and NGOs. Our mission is to develop new tools, standards and approaches to evaluate the quality, performance and environmental and economic impact of bio-based, biodegradable and compostable chemicals and materials (BB-Materials) - BB-REG-NET - Sustainable Chemicals and Materials.
During this workshop participants will:
Hear about, and dicuss the latest BB-REG-NET research findings
Take part in two of our four interactive workshops, aimed at generating new evidence for BB-Materials, focussed on economic impact, environmental impact, circular bioeconomy and communication and market awareness
Meet other like-minded stakeholders working in the BB-Materials Sector

Agenda:
10:30 - 11:00 Registration
11:00 - 11:15 Welcome and Objectives
Dr Jen Vanderhoven, COO, BBIA
11:15 - 12:15 BB-REG-NET Research Findings to Date
Professor Rachel Rothman, University of Sheffield, Professor Joanna Gavins, University of Sheffield, Dr Adrian Higson, NNFCC, Jonathon Hobson, Perspective Economics
12:15- 12:30 The perceptions of Bio-based and biodegradable materials in Westminster
Will Paxton, Higginson Strategy
The teams will break down the recent Perceptions survey both for MPs, Lords and policymakers from DEFRA, DSIT, DESNZ and DBT.
We will discuss the most interesting findings from the survey, how the current parliamentary agenda might frame these perceptions, and look at the next step in how best to inform and engage with Westminster based on the survey results.
12:30 - 13:15 Lunch
13:15 - 14:30 Workshops - participants choose one to attend
Workshop 1: Plastics and Biomass – What’s in a name, and what is it good for? Dr Adrian Higson, MD, NNFCC
In this session, we will explore the key issues surrounding bio-based and biodegradable plastics, focusing on the implications of policy, regulation, and market dynamics. We’ll delve into how these materials are classified and the challenges they face in the marketplace. Additionally, we’ll examine the role of biomass resources, discussing whether and how they should be prioritized across various applications and markets. By integrating both the regulatory landscape of plastics and the sustainability of biomass, we’ll provide a holistic view of the challenges and opportunities in advancing sustainable materials.
Workshop 2: There's Something in the Water: Exploring Product Interactions and Water Treatment for Life Cycle Assessment Professor Rachel Rothman, Dr Stuart Walker, University of Sheffield
In this workshop, we will explore the critical interactions between bio-based and biodegradable products and water systems, and what this means for Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs). We’ll delve into both intentional and unintentional product-water interactions, focusing on how water—especially in the context of wastewater treatment—factors into your product design. Key topics will include biodegradation in water, product solubility, Polymers in Liquid Formulations, and the mixing of bio-based and biodegradable products within water treatment systems. The insights gathered will directly contribute to the next phase of our research, set to be published in September. This workshop aims to identify critical issues and knowledge gaps, ensuring that our findings are as relevant and impactful as possible.
Workshop 3: Economic Opportunities for Bio-Based Materials in UK Public Sector Procurement & the Role of the Emissions Trading Scheme, Jonathan Hobson, Perspective Economics
In this session, we will present the findings from our comprehensive analysis of the UK public sector's procurement of plastics, highlighting key opportunities to promote the adoption of bio-based alternatives. We will also provide an update on related research into the UK Emissions Trading Scheme, exploring its potential to serve as a powerful catalyst for the widespread adoption of bio-based materials. Together, these insights will shed light on how policy and procurement practices can drive meaningful change toward a greener future.
Workshop 4: Eco-Labels: Hype or Help? Professor Joanna Gavins, University of Sheffield
In this session, we will delve into the latest research on eco-labels, examining their effectiveness in promoting sustainable practices while also uncovering their limitations. We will explore what eco-labels can and cannot achieve, with a particular focus on their role in influencing the market for bio-based and biodegradable materials. Through an in-depth discussion, we’ll evaluate whether these labels truly support sustainability efforts or if they simply serve as a marketing tool and identify the challenges that lie ahead in ensuring their genuine impact.
14:30 - 15:00 Coffee Break
15:00 - 16:15 Repeat of above four workshops - participants choose one to attend
16:15 - 16:45 Workshop Summaries Professor Rachel Rothman, University of Sheffield, Professor Joanna Gavins, University of Sheffield, Dr Adrian Higson, NNFCC, Jonathon Hobson, Perspective Economics
16:45 - 17:00 Next steps
