Overview

An introductory workshop with short exercises and interaction Skill level - Beginners/General

Sitting down to write an original TV drama series can feel overwhelming - staring at a blank page, working in isolation, not knowing quite how or where to start. So what do writers need to know before they set out? What questions should they be asking themselves before they open their laptops to write the first line of a script?

Content : This workshop takes writers through the process of designing and developing an original drama/comedy drama series, focusing on the key decisions that need to be made along the way. We’ll be looking at concept, genre, market, characters, plot, story-world, structure and format. We also explore tricks of the screenwriting trade, including planting intrigue & suspense, designing hooks & turning points and building to effective cliff-hangers.

Learning Outcomes: Participants will learn how to evaluate their ideas objectively and will have a clear idea of how to develop them for the market.

About the tutor:

Anji Loman Field is an established writer, story liner, script editor and show-runner. She has worked in film, television and radio drama in multiple genres across three continents and has trained screenwriters for organisations including the Central Film School, the London College of Communication, BBC Media Action, BECTU and Euroscript.
