Event description

Description

In this session, we will explore how to plan, develop and manage a communal food growing space. We will think about plant selection based on soil qualities, light and size, and discuss a care and maintenance schedule from seed to plant. You will also learn about local microclimates, using polytunnels and greenhouses when growing plants for food, and we will look at fruit trees management. The session focuses on growing food communally, and we will therefore also look at practical implications of shared growing spaces.

Pop Farm is an urban farm, growing decorative plants and fresh herbs, vegetables and other ingredients for use by local people, food businesses and Pop Brixton’s community of caterers. We aim to make gardening more accessible to local people, as well as educating, informing and sharing food growing knowledge in the community. To achieve this we have created a beautiful and productive garden where local people can participate in a range of gardening activities.

Trainer: Sebastian Wood.

Seb has been with Urban Growth since April 2016 and plays a key role in running workshops, managing the Brixton Orchard, digital material as well as development of new urban gardens. After doing a Masters in urban planning Seb is now exploring how horticultural practices can be integrated into urban environments for a sustainable future.

Wheelchair Accessible.
