Event description

Description

This event is part of Derby Remembers - Derby’s First World War Cultural Programme

Since 2014, when Ann Featherstone was asked to come up with ‘something local’ on the First World War, she has been writing and performing short stories set in Ilkeston (although it could be any small town in the country) and using the character of Mrs Jenny Eaton as a narrator. Mrs Eaton is a middle-aged woman with a husband and grown-up children, and through her eyes the highs and lows of war-time life are explored. Anxiety, hoarding, queuing, women’s work and anti-war protests are her experiences on her Home Front (and the Home Fronts of many women at the time), and Ann has created monologue-type short stories which bring them to life.

Ann will talk about writing historical fiction and, in particular, creating a sense of time and place using a first-person narrative. She will also talk about writing stories which lend themselves to performance and will read some of ‘Mrs Eaton’s Home Front’ stories to illustrate.

Dr Ann Featherstone taught at the University of Manchester until she retired in 2014. She has written two historical novels, published by John Murray, academic books and articles, and has appeared twice on BBC1’s Who Do You Think You Are, most recently in January 2017 with Sir Ian McKellen.
