Event Details

During this fun writing workshop, you will improve your technical skills and create two pieces of short fiction to be proud of - with Ross Raisin, award-winning three-time novelist.
What are the key elements of a great short story? How do you make a story captivating and satisfying for people to read? This masterclass with award-winning author Ross Raisin will reveal the secrets of writing standout short stories, all in the space of a day.

Whether you’re new to writing or want to improve your skills, this class will teach you how to create compelling characters, dialogue and storylines. By the end of the day, you’ll have worked on two pieces of short fiction – a story and a piece of flash fiction – and have the skills and confidence to continue writing stories after the class.

  • The particular nature of the short story
  • The short story’s relationship to the novel – and whether the process of writing one is different to the other
  • Analysis and discussion of extracted classic and contemporary short fiction (provided during the class)
  • A technical introduction to structuring a short story
  • Practical exercises – write your own piece of flash fiction and your own short story during the class
  • Opportunities for creative discourse in a supportive and encouraging environment
  • Q&A

What to bring

  • Please bring along a collection of short stories or a single story that you particularly like. You’ll be encouraged to let the group know about it, therefore helping each other to widen your knowledge of different short stories and writers
