Event description

Description

Children in care often come into care with a poor nutritional status and can suffer with food anxieties caused by their adverse experiences including abuse and neglect. They also can develop food behaviour issues during care placements due to the stress associated with an unknown environment where they might feel insecure or excluded. Foster carers face many challenges related to such issues and require skills in managing food associated behaviours in order to provide a high standard of care and a stable environment for children and young people.

Benefits of attending

Participants will gain an insight into how food impacts on health and behaviour of children in care. This session is aimed to introduce social workers and managers on the subject of food behaviour issues and its impact on building relationships with children and placement stability.

(NAFP members only)

Session highlights

  • Understanding of the fundamental impact food has on the relationships and dynamics within a care settin

  • Increasing awareness of food practices that have massive potential for creating an environment where children can begin to feel part of a family unit

  • Interactive session with case studies and discussions

  • Food in care charter – raising the profile of food as a safeguarding issue

Food in Care programme

The Food in Care project run by Food Active provides practical support around food issues for those who look after children in care. Amongst other resources, they also offer training that aims to improve the direct care experience for children through exploring food with carers and staff in the context of physical and mental health. In this session, Magdalena Przybylka from Food Active will offer a taster of the training and support that is available.

Who should attend

The session is aimed at anyone who has a direct or indirect role in, and responsibility for, promoting the quality of life of children in care. It is highly recommended for foster carers, residential staff, prospective adopters, social workers, support staff and managers from NAFP member fostering agencies.
