Creating Safer Space: Advanced Module 1 day online course

Designed to offer a face-to-face experience for more people across your Districts at once, the Advanced Module day online course leaders in your church to do this training all together, but without needing to travel as far. Teaching will be offered over Zoom with space for conversations in your local context, and ways to interact with the trainers.

Training Aims

The Advanced Module will enable participants to consolidate and develop their previous safeguarding learning and:

• Explore what this means in your designated role of responsibility within the Church
• Further equip you with skills and resources to be confident in promoting good practice in the Church and community
• Extend your understanding of responding well to different groups within the Church community.

How it works

We will offer the Advanced Module Training as an online event. This includes:

• All the teaching content, taught in-front of a live class, with breaks for discussion and coffee in your local venues
• A way to interact with the training team live during question and answer sessions

Host churches will offer:

• A warm, comfortable venue for 4.5hrs of training
• A chaplain for attendees
• A Circuit Safeguarding coordinator/officer for local questions and answers
• An a way to show and interact with a live-stream, suitable for the size of your group. The solution you use depends on the size of the group: for a 5 or below, a TV with a laptop plugged in may suffice. A larger group may benefit from using a projector and PA system connected to a computer. Regardless, a reliable internet connection will be required throughout the event
• A certificate to all participants andcreate a list for church, Circuit and District records.

Essential Preparation Resources

Participants are required to complete Unit 1a: Preparing the Ground before attending the training on the day. This is normally provided by your venue host (the person asking you to attend), but can also bedownloaded from the Safeguarding Pages on the Methodist Church website; and obtained in print form at Methodist Publishing . You will only have to pay for postage and packing.

Materials

These materials are made available for general interest on the Methodist Church's website and will be provided during the e-learning component of the course. No-one should deliver this material without having had access to these additional notes.

The training should not be undertaken by anyone without agreement from the District Safeguarding Group.

Who should attend this course?

Core List – Required Attendance

• safeguarding officer – District

• safeguarding officer – Circuit

• safeguarding officer - Church

• members of the District Safeguarding Group

• members of the District Policy Committee

• all presbyters or deacons with an active preaching or pastoral ministry (including supernumerary ministers)

• those who are in paid employment or a voluntary role which includes leadership within the Methodist Church, involving direct work with children, young people or vulnerable adults

• those with responsibility for supervision (either training or trained and accredited under the Methodist Church Reflective Supervision Policy 2021-26)

• lay persons who are appointed to exercise pastoral leadership within a local church

• local preachers should enroll and complete the Advanced Module at the earliest opportunity after receiving a Note to Preach and completing the Foundation Module. Both modules must be completed by the end of the second year of training and before their second interview on trial, whichever occurs first.

• worship leaders should enroll and complete the Advanced Module at the earliest opportunity after commencing training and completing the Foundation Module. Both modules must be complete by the end of the second year of training and before their appointment by the Church Council, whichever occurs first.

• those who deliver the Foundation Module

• evangelism/mission enablers

• circuit stewards

• members of the Connexional Complaint Panels, Discipline Committees, Pastoral and Appeals Committees

• those in recognised roles involving pioneering, fresh expressions or evangelism

• mentors for the Youth Participation Scheme

• members of the Safeguarding Committee

Warmly invited but not mandatory

• supernumerary ministers apart from those who have an active preaching or pastoral ministry.

Recognition of Church of England Training

The Methodist Church recognises the Church of England Leadership Module (previously called C2) as equivalent and qualifying training to the Advanced Module. Therefore, those who have undertaken that Church of England course will have satisfied attendance requirements listed above in the Methodist Church.

Renewing Training

The requirement to renew training every four years will only apply to the highest level of safeguarding training undertaken by an individual. Where the Foundation and Advanced Modules are required, following attendance at both courses, only a repeat of the Advanced Module will be necessary in future years.

The 2016 Conference decided that the frequency of undertaking Creating Safer Space training should change from five to four years from September 2017 in order to make sure that training content can keep pace with changes in legislation and safeguarding practices.

Do you accept refunds?

This event is free, therefore we won't give refunds. We do, however ask that you make efforts to let us know if you cannot attend. This helps us with reducing wastage of resources and food.
