Join us here at the South London Book Club for November's meet, where, after a hotly contended vote back in September, we will be going for Creation Lake by Rachel Kushner.
This meeting will take place at the usual time and place of 7pm on the evening of Tuesday, November 4th at the Roundhouse, Wandsworth.
So what is Creation Lake about?Creation Lake, is a taut literary thriller centered on Sadie Smith, a former FBI agent turned freelance operative. Sent to infiltrate a radical eco-commune in rural France, Sadie navigates layers of ideology, surveillance, and identity. As she embeds herself within the group, she encounters Bruno Lacombe, a reclusive anti-civilization theorist whose influence challenges her assumptions. The novel explores the moral ambiguities of espionage, the seductive pull of counter-histories, and the tension between idealism and pragmatism. With dark humor and incisive prose, Kushner interrogates the costs of modernity and the allure of retreating from it.
We will likely be a group of eight on the night. If you are new to the Group, just come along and don't be apprehensive. We were all first timers once. You don't need to bring the book but make sure you have read it and bring your opinions!
If you are attending for the first time, we will likely all be in far corner of the pub. Imagine that you are standing in front of the long bit of the bar, go left, up the steps and we will try to be sitting in the top left-land corner of the pub.
