About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Join us for an afternoon of "Wired connections", where we will have some hands-on fun with electronic connections in e-textiles. Each person at the workshop will create a pair of gloves with ‘half a circuit’ of LEDs and decorations on each glove. The circuit will only be completed when two of the gloves are touched together, either by the wearer alone or by forming a circle with the group. The workshop will demonstrate the basics of e-textiles and allow for a lot of relaxed creativity. We will provide all necessary materials and components, as well as offer suggestions for future projects.

Everyone is welcome!

The workshop will be run by Sophie Nadel (@snart.98, sophienadel.com), a creative technologist who aims to break down barriers to tech by encouraging fun and exploration.

📋 Agenda

Introduction

  • Introduction to electronic circuits – flow of electrons, simple components, series/parallel circuits, the concept of how a "complete" circuit works.
  • Short explanation on how these concepts can be translated to e-textiles, sewable components and conductive thread.

Main activity: create your own gloves!

  • Mark out circuits.
  • Place components on a stencil and test the circuit using crocodile clips.
  • Sew essential components onto gloves.
  • Embroider designs around the components.
  • Sew conductive thread through components to complete the circuit.
  • Connect your own circuit to troubleshoot any problems.
  • All the participants can stand in a circle and hold hands to connect all circuits at once and light all the LEDs.

🌸 About c3s

Creative Coding Crafts Space embodies the notion of making space - physical space, head space, collaboration space - where we can get together and craft coding projects, generative artwork, new or ‘traditional’ forms of creative coding projects: anything that is born out of the interactions and inspiration that ‘space’ allows for.

We aim to meet about once a month, usually (but not this time!) in or around Hackney Wick - an area known for its large artistic community and a Creative Enterprise Zone. We kick things off with a couple of hours of structured content—introducing a new topic or tool, going through live demos, etc. After that, you can choose to stay and delve deeper into the topic of the day, work on your own projects or collaborate with others.

🛎️ Thanks to a friend of c3s, we have got our venue for free this time, so the ticket cost is only to cover the cost of the materials for the gloves.
