Creative Coffee Leicester at Phoenix Square
Wednesday 30rd September from 10-12 noon
If like me you walk past the Athena and reminisce about it's time as a cinema (in a pretty dodgy area at the time), then you'll love 'The History of Cinema-Going in Leicester'. Put together by local film-maker Kieran Chauhan as part of the Cinema and Television History archive (CATH). We'll have a short screening of the film followed by a Q&A with Kieran where you can ask him some probing questions about the process of making the film, Leicester's cinema history, and where he see's things heading now.
Additionally we've got the usual blend of coffee, creativity and chat in Phoenix Square cafe before and after the talk.
PLEASE NOTE THE WORKSHOP WILL BEGIN AT APPROXIMATELY 10:30AM IN THE SCREEN ROOM
Guest Speaker – Kieran Chauhan, Cinema and Television History
Local film maker, Kieran Chauhan has been making films for as long as he can remember. He currently co-runs ImageNova and is an active member of Seven / Five Productions. He put together 'The History of Cinema Going in Leicester' as part of DMU's Cinema and Television History archive.
About The History of Cinema-Going in Leicester
The History of Cinema-Going in Leicester tells the story of the first so-called “picture palaces” in 1900s to today’s multiplexes.
Researcher Dr Matt Jones" attended “silver screen” film showings at the Phoenix to interview audiences about their memories of the cinema. On-screen interviews, archive footage and old photographs of now-lost cinemas such as the Odeon, Trocadero or the Tudor Cinema feature in the documentary.
“We have spent time talking to people about what they remember about going to the cinema in Leicester – where they went, when they went and what films they queued for,” he said. “It’s been a fascinating project and one we will continue.”
