Creative Community Workshop on shared histories of the rainbow
Event Information
About this Event
Co-create an experimental video artwork....
From the scientific origins of the rainbow and its associations across time and popular culture, join Union Chapel's artist in residence, Guillaume Vandame, for a free workshop discussing the past year and exchanging stories and ideas around the rainbow and its histories.
Alongside his project to collect handmade rainbow artworks this past year, Vandame was inspired to explore how the personal and shared histories of the rainbow through crowd-sourced imagery, videos and stories. What kind of narratives on the rainbow might emerge through a collective exchange of information?
Within this two hour workshop, Vandame will spend the first hour introducing his practice and inviting participants to share their experiences from the past year. There will be a short break followed by a series of thematic rapid-fire questions and collective discussions around five themes:
- 1) the science, phenomenon and origins of the rainbow
- 2) the symbolism of the rainbow across world cultures
- 3) the rainbow in fine art and art history
- 4) the rainbow as a symbol of the LGBTQ+ community
- 5) the rainbow and its associations with the NHS.
The conversations will be recorded and participants will be invited to follow up with related content to help shape and co-create an experimental video artwork by Vandame launching with Union Chapel in January 2021!
