Event description

Description

Join us for a very special event with local artist Wendy Simpson to talk about her work as a textile designer for Horrockses Fashions in Preston during the 1950s.

Wendy Simpson (nee Greenhalgh) began working for Horrockses as a typist but after completing a night-school fashion diploma at the Harris School of Art she moved from the typing pool to the design studio.

Wendy created her own designs for Horrockses, but she was also responsible for recolouring bought-in patterns and putting them into repeat. As a result, Wendy has a wealth of practical and creative textile design experience to share with us. Wendy's archive from the Lancashire Record Office will be brought to the Harris for the event. This includes original designs on paper, along with finished fabric samples for dresses, children's clothes and towelling fabrics - all of which she will explore with us whilst talking about her career.

This will be an informal 'in conversation' event and questions from attendees are very much encouraged.

Please note that in the afternoon local artist Bonnie Craig will run a pattern design workshop in the Harris Makerspace. In the 1950s Wendy often visited the Harris Museum & Art Gallery for ideas for her designs. Inspired by this, participants will sketch motifs from around the building as the basis of their own patterns. Please see Eventbrite for details of this afternoon event on Wednesday 29 November. Tickets for the afternoon event are £20 and must be booked in advance. (The morning 'In Conversation with Wendy Simpson' event is free, but tickets must also be booked as places are limited).
